Special Acknowledgement to the song " Something I Need"
“Somehow, when “the girl” was with Jacob, the child remarkably starts breathing with ease and his heart distress seems to miraculously disappear!”
The girl’s phone kept ringing… while yawning, she painstakenly reached for it as the owl looked on… Upon hearing the voice at the other line, suddenly the girl’s eyes lit up; she stood and without saying a word, she rushed to the door…
“Haurnjana! Barn, staide!” (child, stop) where are you going? Sleipnir mumbled and hurriedly flew behind her.
“Weis habam gaggan swinan, Atta! (We have to hurry Father!) Jacob… “Ni frabja” (I do not understand)… Eis qiþand (they say) he is sick again!” The girl gasped in Gothic and sighed.
She rushed outside and vigorously ran until she was flying in air… Haurnjana soared like a wild animal in search for its prey! She turned into a gigantic “Kirin” (Chinese Unicorn)…only her swift, gliding shadow was visible … her purple eyes turned red like flames engulfed in the darkness! Sleipnir followed… he flipped his wings faster, he flew hard but lagged behind her. The owl knew no one can stop his daughter when she hears bad news about little Jacob…
They reached Marcus Barca’s home in an instant! The Unicorn obliquely vaulted through the glass walls which directly led into Jacob’s room, bypassing the other people inside the house… “for in her natural form… no distance or walls… no storm nor fire or any natural disaster would be a barrier!” Sleipnir thought…
The boy Jacob who will turn seven this year was panting and breathing slowly, a wireless translucent cannula was over his nose and mouth. Jacob was small for his age, bits of tears dabbed his eyes as he struggled to breathe. He immediately opened them when he felt her presence, then he saw the shadow of the unicorn through the walls. Instantly, a soft, melody slowly permeated the room… like magic it brought relief and comfort to Jacob”s heart!
“Meins Haurnjana? (my Unicorn?)…” Jacob whispered…”Liupon?” (sing?) He gave out a small whimper as the girl approached his side.
“Ja... (yes) it’s me Jacob! Shhhh… listen…Liup (song)”. She whispered and continued to hum and held the child in her arms. Gradually the boy’s shallow breathing became regular and Haurnjana knew he was better. Her melodious hymn lingered…
Minutes later Marian, the boy’s doctor entered the room, she was not surprised to see the boy soundly sleeping in Haurnjana’s arms. It has been like this for so many years ever since Jacob was born…
“Marcus… she’s here” She called out to Marcus Barca who was still trying to get hold of the girl on the phone. Marcus rushed inside the room. He became pacified when he saw the girl who nodded to him.
“He will be okay… ' Marian assured Barca.
“Yes…yes… my boy will be fine…” Slightly dazed, Marcus whispered back and both nodded to the girl… then as many times like before, they quietly left Jacob’s room.

Sleipnir tried to stand against the strong winds… he bravely held on to a bark of a tree that was covered with snow. He patiently watch outside Marcus Barca’s house which was insulated in solar glass. Sadly he listened to Haurnjana;s song…
He heard the slivering and splintering sounds of icicles falling and breaking to the ground, the winds vehemently gushed and roared. Thick lumps of snow rapidly plunged from the skies but it quickly melted and did not fill the solar paneled roads…
Haurnjana’s song sustained in the air… it was audible only to Sleipnir and Jacob…The sound brought an excruciating, high pitched sound to Sleipnir’s ears!
The unicorn’s song was a warning of an overpowering storm that is brewing from a distance!

Note: In this story, we see the unusual relationship between a little boy with an on-going abnormality and a creature that only the boy and the owl can see....
